Caring for Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Diabetes is a long-lasting disease and it can give rise to some serious problems in your body. Three important parts of the body — heart, eyes and kidney — can be easily damaged if there is no proper control over the disease. One of the most frequent problems that most of the Diabetics face is about the occurrence of foot ulcers. Called the Diabetic Foot Ulcer, its complication can result in the amputation of lower limbs of the patient.
Diabetic foot ulcer is mainly a kind of injury or an open sore that is easily visible on the feet of the patient. A large number of people suffering from Diabetes are afflicted with this problem. It is, therefore, necessary for everybody to get the basic information about this problem so that certain steps can be taken to avoid it or even decide the line of treatment.
Foot ulcers are usually seen on soles of the feet of Diabetics. Sometimes, other areas of the foot can also get affected by foot ulcers. Remember that this can result in serious complications for those suffering from Diabetes because quite often the affected lower limb has to be cut. Therefore, Diabetes is considered a major cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation.
There are several factors that heighten the risk of foot ulcers among Diabetics.
Fluctuating blood sugar level is one cause that increases the possibility of foot ulcer. It is only through regular blood sugar check that Diabetes can be brought under control. If you do not periodically monitor it and the blood sugar level keeps on changing, then you can develop hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia including foot ulcers.
The second factor related to foot ulcers among Diabetics is sensory neuropathy. In this, the person suffering from Diabetes has little or no sensation on his or her feet. Extremely high blood sugar level in the body makes nerves in the feet numb and insensitive.
Prolonged diabetes is often considered a factor responsible for foot ulcers. Among other causes of foot ulcers are erratic blood circulation in the body, improper foot care and unsuitable footwear.
For example, just imagine that a Diabetic suffering from sensory neuropathy or numb nerves goes for a long walk wearing unsuitable shoes. Sooner than later, the patient will develop blisters on the feet and they would not heal easily because of poor blood circulation. This would result in foot ulcers as the rising blood sugar level in the body will also aggravate the problem.
In order to get relief from foot ulcers, you can consider an appropriate line of treatment. This should be aimed at faster healing of the affected portion in the foot. You need to keep on frequently cleaning the affected area with an antiseptic recommended by your doctor. In addition to this, always go on removing dead skin from the affected foot.
Remember, foot ulcers among those suffering from Diabetes, can be avoided. However, it is necessary to regularly monitor and control the blood sugar level in your body and simultaneously watch the feet carefully.
