Diabetes Research
Because the condition of diabetes is quite a common one all over the world, much research has been poured into the disorder all these years. Although the field of medicine is still far from developing a complete cure for diabetes, the many years of extensive research have indeed paid off. This is because condition has become more manageable than ever today.
One significant advancement that deserves mention is in the improvement of the way insulin is delivered into the diabetic. Gone are the days when the diabetic would have to inject insulin directly into their bloodstream through needles and such. These days, diabetics need only to wear a certain pump that is capable of delivering prescribed dosages of insulin into their bloodstream. Do not worry about the amount of insulin that is pumped into the body for this is completely programmable. You can configure your pump to deliver just the right and prescribed amount of insulin very easily. Thus, there is no need to worry about an overdose and such. Just make sure that the pump is indeed programmed appropriately.
At present, medical researchers and scientists are trying to develop an inhalable form of insulin, which can indeed make delivery more convenient. However, there are still a lot of problems with this form of insulin, primarily, in the fact that there are more chances of insulin being wasted in the process of inhalation. Still, this is a major advancement, so to speak.
There has also been a lot of advancement in the process of monitoring glucose levels. Back in the days, diabetics would have to physically go to hospitals or clinics, or even makeshift clinics, just to have their glucose levels checked and monitored. Today, diabetics no longer have to do that at all. With the proper equipment at hand, it is now possible for diabetics to monitor their glucose levels in the comfort of their own homes. This also makes it possible for diabetics to keep a closer eye on their glucose levels, since testing can be done more frequently. Medications can then be administered more appropriately as well.
For many individuals Blindness has always been one of the more serious complications that come with diabetes. Fortunately, with the advent of laser eye surgery, diabetics can now rest a little bit easy when it comes to this particular complication.
More and more funds are currently being placed into diabetes research so the prospect of developing a complete cure is certainly promising. The fact that a diabetic can now live the typical normal life holds that promise in its own already.
